Philip Clieve (The Father Confessor) is a British tenor from Lancashire. He completed his master’s degree at the Royal Northern College of Music and is a graduate of the prestigious National Opera Studio, where he developed his craft under the guidance of leading coaches and directors. He is a frequent attendee of Alwyn Mellor’s Dramatic Voices workshops.
Philip has performed with many of the country’s foremost opera companies, including the Royal Ballet and Opaera, Opera North, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Grange Park Opera, Longborough Festival Opera, and Buxton Opera. Recent highlights include Sherryar in Grange Park Opera’s Taj Mahal, Monostatos in Wild Arts’ The Magic Flute, Don Jose in Rogue Opera’s Carmen, Frederick in Jam Factory Opera’s The Pirates of Penzance and covering the tenor soloist in Opera North’s acclaimed children’s production Big Opera Adventure.
Philip was a finalist in the Mastersingers’ Carole Rees Prize for promising Wagnerian singers. He has sung Augustin Moser and covered David in Saffron Opera Group’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and in 2025 returned to the company to cover both Steuermann and Erik in Der Fliegende Holländer.
Equally at home on the concert platform, Philip possesses an extensive oratorio repertoire ranging from Smythe to Mendelssohn.
