Born in Hertfordshire of German Austrian parentage, Peter Bronder Second Commissioner studied at the Royal Academy of Music and National Opera Studio before debuting as Principal Tenor at Glyndebourne and Welsh National Opera.
Early appearances included La bohème, La traviata, Rigoletto and Lucia di Lammermoor, alongside Mozart and Strauss works.
He has since become associated with dramatic German repertoire, notably Mime (Siegfried) at La Scala, Staatsoper Berlin, Barcelona, Palermo and Bergen, and Herod (Salome) in Milan, Madrid, Turin, São Paolo and Hong Kong. Other highlights include Loge (Das Rheingold) for Scottish Opera, Erik (Der fliegende Holländer) in Paris and Rouen, and the title role in Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg in Frankfurt, Seville and Lisbon. He has also sung the title roles in Peter Grimes, Pfitzner’s Palestrina (recorded on CD) and Wagner’s Rienzi. His United Kingdom appearances include Covent Garden, English National Opera, Opera North and Scottish Opera, with further credits at the Metropolitan Opera New York, Bavarian State Opera, Bregenz Festival, Netherlands Opera, Komische Oper Berlin, La Monnaie, San Francisco Opera and Opéra de Paris, where he returned in 2025/26 as Triquet in Eugene Onegin.
Equally active in concert, he has worked with Barenboim, Haitink, Pappano, Dohnanyi and Petrenko. He records for Decca, EMI, Philips and Chandos, and appears on DVDs of Siegfried, Salome, Boris Godunov and Andrea Chénier.
